City Nature Challenge 2023: Brooklyn's Journal

February 24, 2023

Where do you want to go in Brooklyn for CNC 2023?

Observation Dates for 2023's City Nature Challenge (CNC) are Friday, April 28th through Monday, May 1st. Last year, I searched for Brooklyn locations that looked "under-observed" in iNaturalist, especially during CNC days, by researching these questions:

Species

  • What species might we expect to see? What have been observed over the same 4 days in past years?
  • Which species might we expect to see, but have not been recorded? Which should we go looking for? Where should we look for them?

Locations

  • Where are the hotspots for Observations? Where are people going?
  • Where are the diversity hotspots? Where can people see the widest range of species in the smallest, or most accessible, areas?
  • Where are the gaps? What places are not getting visited during CNC? (Or at all?!) Which seem like they should be good spots, but just aren't getting visited?

CNC organizers decided to settle on the same weekend for each year: end of April, beginning of May. So looking at a date range for the last 2 weeks of April, and the first 2 of May, should suffice to identify hotspots, and gaps.

What are some spots you want to visit during CNC 2023?
