The purpose of this project is to show where in NZ people grow crops of food for humans and domestic animals. Observations are welcome from the smallest productive vegetable garden or fruit tree to those of commercial crops observed from rural roads. Both the seasonal development of crops and their regional movement over the long-term due to climate change will be interesting. Over thousands of years humans have established mutually beneficial relationships with the ancestors of modern crops. Agriculture has greatly expanded the ranges of these plants, typically at the expense of more diverse natural ecosystems. As we have simplified ecosystems, the products of photosynthesis are channeled away from other species (except those we call pests) to ourselves. Crop maps help us see where we can grow the species at the bases of our food chains and may also help us to think about the balance we need to strike between agriculture and more natural ecosystems.
