On 10 August 2013, members of the Canterbury Botanical Society explored Eyrewell Scientific Reserve (2.6 ha) and the nearby ECan reserve at Dagnum (23 ha).

Eyrewell Scientific Reserve is one of the few remaining remnants of dryland kanuka forest-shrubland on the Canterbury Plains. Dagnum consists of dry grassland-herbfield with scattered native trees and shrubs.
