Fall salmon return to Coleman Hatchery; tribal concerns over Chinook population continue.

REDDING, Calif. — Thousands of fall-run salmon have returned to Battle Creek in Shasta County. The Coleman National Fish Hatchery opened the fish ladder Tuesday morning so the salmon will begin to flow into their holding ponds.

Historic plant: Lahontan cutthroat trout to be released this weekend back into native Lake Tahoe.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will host a historic fish-planting event this weekend at Lake Tahoe.

The Lahontan National Fish Hatchery Complex will release 5,000 Lahontan cutthroat trout back into their native waters on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 5-6. The event is part of an educational outreach on behalf of the hatchery, as well as USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Nevada Department of Wildlife, Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California.

Scientists and sport fishers team up to gather data on fisheries.

This excursion is part of the California Collaborative Fisheries Research Project. Initiated in 2007 by Moss Landing Marine Labs’ Rick Starr and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s Dean Wendt, the project fulfills the requirements of the California Marine Life Protection Act, which directed the state to redesign and reevaluate California’s marine protected areas.

Climate havoc wipes out coastal kelp as S.F. Bay’s native fish species die off.

A climate-related catastrophe off the California coast has resulted in the death of 90% of the kelp from San Francisco to Oregon as an explosion of ravenous urchins devours everything in sight. And it’s happening at the same time native fish in San Francisco Bay are dying out, two studies released Monday documented.
