Monitoring the change in vegetaion at micro-site 004, the Lower Arena bank under and around a karamu. This tree and the surrounding banks were densely covered in Japanese honeysuckle, with blackberry suckering and rooted throughout under the honeysuckle, its foliage appearing in places. Cape Honey Flower (CHF) filled the bank behind the karamu, with stems almost horizontal to c. 4m long and c.3mH, suckering in all directions.
On the CHF bank several surviving native trees were released from Japanese honeysuckle, CHF and blackberry in November 2018: three ti kouka, a large healthy karamu halfway up the bank, and several largely defoliated karamus at the top of the bank, one mature and several juvenile mapou, with several juvenile kawakawa at the margin of CHF bank with Flame Tree Bank.
