Greening Waipara: Flowers,Berries & Seedlings.
Biodiversity project 6 years on. Food for birds and insects in the valley. Increased wildlife, less spraying, benefits to horticulture especially the wine industry. Increased natural floral history, attractive mini bush patches in the valley.
We are observing some natural revegetation occurring on some sites where certain areas are left fallow but not overgrown with competing weeds.
i think there is an increase in insects especially moths. Little owls can be heard often, and this season there is certainly an increase in harrier hawks. I havent been out asking vineyard owners about the NZ falcon, but they are breeding nearby in the valley. I have heard more bellbirds this season, and SIPO are also visiting the vinyards. One GW lake lcoation has over 10 breeds of birds, and last year a white heron was seen beside another GW pond. Im not good at spotting skinks and gekkos so it would be great to have some helpers to observe.
There have been an abundance and big selection of berries this season
