Dear iNaturalists,

SHSU is seeking data on the occurrence of a specific OE parasite in Monarch butterflies.

About the parasite: LINK - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ophryocystis_elektroscirrha
Ophryocystis elektroscirrha (sometimes abbreviated OE or O.e.[1]) is an obligate, neogregarine parasite that infects monarch (Danaus plexippus) butterflies.

Tis study has concluded but we will keep the project live for purposes of follow-up.

About

This will be a project to help better understand the Monarch Butterfly and its complex ecosystem, host plant and nectaring relationships within the state of Texas.

We will be collecting data about Monarch butterflies (in all their life stages) and the Milkweed plants that their caterpillars use as host plants. Look for more details soon!!!!
