[OhioDragonfly] Conference Registration open and spring dragonflies!

Hi everyone,

Wow! What a whirlwind the last few days have been. Hopefully you are well stocked on toilet paper since there seems to be a frenzy in the stores right now. Alternatively, right now is the perfect time to consider investing in a bidet.

However, we do have good news! If you haven't noticed, the weather is getting much nicer and soon dragonflies and damselflies will be emerging! Going outside and hiking is still okay as long as you maintain safe distances from others and do regular thorough hand washing. Just probably don't drive too far from home. Will you be the first to document a dragonfly on iNaturalist this year (excluding dragonflies observed in greenhouses)?

For an idea of what you might expect to be emerging soon, refer to my spring post from last year: https://u.osu.edu/ohioodonatasurvey/2019/03/29/spring-dragons-what-to-expect-in-march-april-in-ohio/

Ohio Dragonfly Conference
As of right now, the Ohio Dragonfly Conference registration IS open. The Ohio Dragonfly Conference is scheduled for June 5th-7th in Mansfield Ohio. There is a size cap of 100 people (because of venue size, but adding field guides we might go over ban limit).

However, given all the recent news about Covid-19, we will definitely play it by ear as we get closer. So feel free to register now if you want, and we can reimburse you if we need to. Or bookmark this email and register later. Or wait for another email from me in a month. I doubt we will fill up this year, so I wouldn't be too worried about that. Your safety is our priority, so we want you all to be okay to watch dragons another day. We will work through this.
More information and links to the registration can be found here: https://u.osu.edu/ohioodonatasurvey/2020/02/28/2020-ohio-dragonfly-conference-join-us-june-5th-7th/

Upcoming events:
Well, as you might have noticed, most events for the next two months have been cancelled or rescheduled. So I have no group activities to share. Feel free to watch our webpage for future events (https://u.osu.edu/ohioodonatasurvey/2017/12/21/upcoming-events/). That being said, you can still get out and look for dragonflies on your own! Or also consider browsing educational websites to learn even more about our wonderful beasts. Our resources page has lots of older presentations and links to relevant websites (see: https://u.osu.edu/ohioodonatasurvey/identification-resources/). If you want some larval beauty, consider visiting https://www.macroinvertebrates.org/ to see some amazing immature dragonfly photography along with ID tips.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me.

Stay well,

MaLisa Spring
State Coordinator of the Ohio Dragonfly Survey
