North side - 1/21/20

January 21, 2020 (Tuesday) 9:15 am – 11:30 pm: 293 dead newts, 1 injured. Many freshly killed.

It was cloudy and cold, a bit windy, but dry, during the survey. Looked wet in some area, the creeks were running. I documented 1 injured and 293 dead newts, many of them were fresh, a few looked like they were just hit.
I found a few other roadkills - a dead amphibian, similar to ones I've seen before, another animal, a beetle, three millipedes, and a Jerusalem cricket.
Coverage: north part - the county park parking lot till the second stop sign.
Rainfall: (MTD: 1.72 in; YTD: 14.07 in) cold, dry. Data from - http://www.weathercat.net/wxraindetail.php
Traffic: 3 truck (only 1 big gravel truck), 15 cars (including 1 maintenance pickup - county parks), 4 bike, 3 pedestrians.

OMG - you found a lot today @merav :(

I hate it when they're injured and not yet dead. It brings tears to my eyes.

yes, it was especially horrible. so many dead, and many of them fresh. and then the injured one, still moving...

how horrible! so much for my thought the worst was over.

did you record any before the turn out 100yds north of the quarry? i haven't seen any on that stretch, and did not walk it last time.

@josescience1, I've counted as many as 72 in that one short section after rowing season started, so please patrol from the big parking lot at the county boat launch to the stop sign when you're doing the northern section. Thanks.
I understand why you didn't patrol it last time, because you saw very little fresh roadkill. But now that the rowing season is upon us and the weather is warming up, I think you'll see a lot in that section.

yes, I've seen quite a few in that area as well, and once or twice found a live one there, so I'm always on the look for another one.

i didn't have any there the previous two times, and this last time i drove it slowly but didn't see any, next time i'll make sure to walk it.
