BIMBY - The Great BC Butterfly Search for 2022 has begun

BIMBY Seekers came together on April 9, 2022 for a 90 plus minute training. We learned from Dr. Tara Moreau from UBC Botanical Garden, Dr. Michelle Tseng from UBC Science Faculty, Stephen Deedes-Vincke, Alex Wong and Michelle Chan on why we are doing this? On how to input data and photos to iNaturalist BIMBY Project? On what to do with walking transects in BC and on how to engage school-aged students to join the June BIMBY School BioBlitz?
It was a wonderful experience for the Committee to meet our new Citizen Scientists. It is equally exciting to know our new volunteers have agreed with a new title for us - BIMBY Seekers. True to our new title, BIMBY Seekers will start looking for and documenting butterflies across the province.
This is an exciting and special year for BIMBY Project because not only are we going province-wide, we are also a stand alone project un the David Suzuki Foundation's Rewilding Communities stream.
Guess what, we are 306 strong this year and I am sure the number of BIMBY Seekers will grow as we spread our wings, heading out looking for BC Butterflies.
We hope to learn about the state of BC Butterflies. Diversity and abundance are crucial. Interconnectedness of BC Butterfly and native plant species are also our focus. There is so much to learn and explore. With the weather settling down for the Spring and summer seasons, BIMBY Seekers will be BUSY!! And along the way, you will be supporting each other's work, one BC butterfly at a time!!
Good luck seekers.

Gearing up for Butterflyway Season 2020!!

You did a great job in 2019!! Thank you for all our citizen scientists who took the butterfly photos, helped ID the species and took the time to share with BIMBY Butterflies in BC.
Together, we have over 3000 observations, 595 observers, 249 identifiers and 121 species of butterflies across the province.
Because of your work, the Butterflyway Project in BC is able to gauge the species of butterflies that showed up in 2019 and have now formed a basis of what to expect in 2020.
The Butterflyway Project in Vancouver, Richmond and the District of North Vancouver will start recruitment for new Butterflyway Rangers on February 10, 2020.
There will be a registration/application link on David Suzuki Foundation website and social media starting Feb. 10 and will stay up for at least two weeks.
If you live outside of the three Lower Mainland cities and want to help, you can participate in the iNaturalist BIMBY Butterflies in BC for 2020.
Stay tuned!!
