Keeping the BioBlitz Series Alive/New Training Video

Hey there fellow observers and naturalists!

It's been some time since we last posted in our Journal, I hope you all have been staying safe and healthy during these trying times.

We at the Cape Perpetua Collaborative have been working away in the background on a few angles to this project and would like to share some of that progress with you.

First and foremost, we are trying to come up with ways to host "events" while maintaining safety protocols and procedures laid out for the COVID-19 Pandemic. Part of that, we hope, will take the form of socially distanced field trips in the coming year of 2021. In between potential BioBlitz events the project remains open for observation submittals, and we encourage all of you to continue contributing your data and observations; don't forget your masks and social distancing!

The second and final update for today is that we have a brand new training video now available for folks to watch. This video was developed in collaboration with Oregon's 5 Marine Reserve Community teams, of which the Cape Perpetua Collaborative is one of. This video offers some background information on BioBlitzing, how to use the iNaturalist website, and gives a brief overview of each of the 5 Marine Reserves in Oregon as well as places of interest for observing and surveying. Whether you're looking for a refresher course in BioBlitzing, information on Oregon's Marine Reserves or simply bored at home having binge watched all your favorite shows already, this video is a great resource we are proud to provide.

So that's it! Keep up the good work and keep your eyes on this page for future posts and event planning.

Much love and Happy Holidays,

-CPC Team

Mushroom Lecture and BioBlitz - Fall 2019

It's that time of year again folks, and the mushrooms are already popping! Grab your gear and friends and join us October 19th for another mushroom bioblitz in the Greater Cape Perpetua Region.

I know last fall was a real bust for most of us, with hot and dry weather into November. But fear not, the weather is surely on our side this time. We also have our resident mycological wizard, Anna Moore, returning with a presentation focusing on the diversity of fungi found in dunes and forests from Reedsport to Cape Perpetua. Her lecture will lead into a guided tour along the trails of the region in search of our elusive gilled, toothed and pored quarry.

Those who would like to take part in the guided walk portion of the event should review the flier in the link below, and RSVP as there are a limited number of slots available.

If you aren't able to get a spot in the guided tour, there are still plenty of trials to hike and fungi to find. As always, be sure to bring your waterproof shoes, raincoat, water and snacks. See you all out there!

2018 is off to a GREAT start!

Hey there everyone, it's time for another update and some speculation at upcoming BioBlitz events to participate in.

Firstly, we have a guest speaker lined up to give a talk near the end of this month at the Visitor Center. We hope to add on a BioBlitz event to this, but are still in planning to ensure the guest is comfortable and prepared to handle all you avid naturalists. Stay tuned for any quick updates should we have an event this January.

Looking to the spring, this years World Migratory Bird Day is on May 12th. We have yet to conduct any land based surveys for seabirds, and this would be a perfect event to build a BioBlitz around. Plans are still in the works, so keep an eye to your Notifications as we update you with our progress.

And, to close out the first half of the year, we are working in partnership with the Oregon Coast Aquarium to conduct a BioBlitz event in coordination with all of the other Marine Reserve communities here in Oregon. This larger effort will help to see our expansive database used to further the greater knowledge of species presence along the Oregon Coast, and stand as an example for those communities just coming to the BioBlitz table. Plans are for an event in early July, and we will make sure you all get the lowdown ans details as they are released.

So that's that. We have a couple events in the works, and one Big One lined up for early summer. But these don't have to be the only events on the schedule. We would like to invite you, our loyal participant and naturalist, to feel free to envision events of your own. Should you get inspired to work on a new event of your own devising, please do not hesitate to contact us for support and some brainstorming!

We will be hosting a presentation on the Sea star wasting disease at the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center, Friday at 4pm on the 26th of May.

The following day we will be taking advantage of the -2.5ft low tide by starting our bioblitz work at 8am, meeting again at the Visitor Center. This bioblitz will focus mostly on inter-tidal species, with an added emphasis on Ochre Sea stars (Pisaster ochraceus). Participants will go through a short training talk before splitting up and starting their surveys.

On Sunday we will be carrying out another bioblitz, focusing more on the beach areas of the Cape Perpetua region. This event will finish up with a little group picnic at Neptune state park at Noon.

With only a couple weeks till this next event kicks off, we hope you all can squirrel away the time to meet us out there for this celebratory bioblitz weekend!
