Updating boundaries for National Wildlife Refuges

Hello!

Thank you to members for trusting the National Wildlife Refuge System project and sharing your observations and obscured coordinates with the project. We are grateful for iNaturalist and this community as a resource to document biodiversity on Refuge lands.

We are currently updating boundaries for our Refuges to reflect the most accurate location information and ensure we capture all relevant observations across the Refuge System. With this, you may be receiving email notifications that the project requirements have changed. Please be aware that this is the source of the change. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause as there are many boundaries to update!

Thank you again for sharing your observations with the project.

I want to add that it is not possible to 'turn off' email notifications via the iNaturalist system, unfortunately. The staff at iNaturalist are aware of this as a non-existent feature.

Excellent news! Will this include adding adding boundaries where admin buildings/visitor centers are noncontiguous with current refuge borders on iNaturalist? I noticed that the admin building for Big Oaks NWR is just south of the established borders, though it is technically part of the refuge. I happened to notice when uploading some photos I took near the building.

We are planning to add boundaries as necessary as there are many more properties within the Refuge System aside from just refuges. Thank you for pointing this out as an example where we may be missing observations. I will keep this in mind as I am going through updates. Just a note that I'll be focusing on updating existing locations for the project before getting to adding new locations. Thank you!

Thank you for this heads-up!

It's becoming increasingly annoying to get an email two or three times a week about the changes. But now that I've read this, it helps to understand. I don't want to leave the project but I might have to until all changes have been made. Good luck!
