Great Egret

Ardea alba

Notes 3

Biggest, whitest bird around. Size of a Great Blue Heron. Long all-dark legs, yellow bill (sometimes muddy greyish yellow), and all-white feathers. Mostly in the baylands but can be seeing commuting overhead, or occasionally standing still in a field somewhere (they'll hunt squirrels and gophers). I sometimes see them standing on the grassy slopes next to 280, particularly around the Stanford Dish. Fly with their necks curled up in an S.
