Often in small flocks pecking in the short grass at the side of trails in winter, especially along the coast and bayshore. Only the adults have the bright yellow & black striped crowns. The immature birds have brown instead of black, and reduced or no yellow.
Often hanging out with White-crowned Sparrows, the immature birds of which look pretty similar but have yellow beaks instead of grey.
