Red Fox

Vulpes vulpes

Summary 3

The Red Fox is the largest of the foxes found in North America. They range from red to brown in color, with dark legs and stand between 35-50 cm tall at the shoulder and are 45-90 cm in length. Their tails are roughly 30-55 cm in length and touch the ground when they are standing and have a distinctive white tip (image 2). They can weigh up to 14 kg, males are generally larger than females. Omnivorous but consume more meat than most foxes usually in the form of small rodents but will occasionally consume larger prey. Red Foxes are found world wide and live in almost every habitat preferring the edges of scrub land/forests, but have been sighted in metropolitan areas and above timber line. They are found in Iron County. Easily identified from other foxes by their color and larger size. They are smaller than coyotes or wolves. See image 3 for comparison of foxes tracks to other canines as well as shape and size of droppings (image 4).
