Common around the coast of the North Island in the subtidal zone.

There are 2 forms of this.

  • The less common ‘osculifera’ form occurs as smooth loaf-shaped mounds in the shallow subtidal as seen in the first photo.
  • The most common ‘alata’ form occurs as deep cups in the deeper areas as seen in the second photo.
