Gorgonidium intermedium

Location 2

Peru

This species is known only from areas along the Urubamba River, Cusco, Peru. Found in two protected areas: Manu National Park (and Biosphere Reserve) and the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu.

Description 2

Tuberous herb. It exhibits "latent periods", when there are no leaves no inflorescences, which may be the reason for the scant herbarium specimens.

Habitat Type 2

Grows in "semi-xeric" areas along the Urubamba River.
Lingan (2006) describes the two ecological regions where the species grows: "Mesoandina", which includes the "western slopes", the mid-elevation areas of the sierra (Interandean Valles) and the "altiplano"; and "Bosques Pluviales Montanos" (montane rainforest), which are found at high altitudes on the "eastern slopes" and between the Huancabamba and Chinchipe rivers at 2,500-3,500 m asl.
