Trip to Brazos Bend State Park

I took a trip to Brazos Bend State Park. I've been many times, but as always, it was a great time, and I found new appreciation for the trees there.

Notable findings

  • There were several tree species that I was unfamiliar with, so I had fun trying to ID them. Sugarberry, or Sugar Hackberry trees, were very common. There were a couple of elm species, including (I believe) the American Elm! I now know much better how Pecan trees look as well. And the baldcypresses are always a cool sight to behold.
  • I was amazed by the 300+ year old live oaks there. Their twisted, sprawling branches, the Spanish moss draped over them, and their enormous girth. I've been to this park before and seen them before, but only now that I'm into trees was I so amazed by them.
  • I saw many birds, but was unable to get good photos of most of them. My favorites were the Anhinga, the Roseatte Spoonbill, and the Little Blue Heron
  • I saw, but was unable to get a picture of, an large bullfrog with a mottled pattern on its back.
  • 2 Red-eared Sliders nested and ready to lay eggs
  • 27 gators, including a few juveniles.

Overall, it was a great trip, and I'm excited to go back again.
