Prostrate Kowhai Sophora prostrata

Observer

Description

There are quite a few prostrate kowhai on the Wither Hills, but some of them I suspected of being due to re vegetation efforts rather than naturally occurring, however due to the relatively inaccessibility of this example, (or rather cluster of plants), I think they're naturally occurring.

New Zealand Pipit Anthus novaeseelandiae ssp. novaeseelandiae

Observer

kiwihobbit

Date

Description

Pipits and skylarks are similar in appearance, but I'm picking this one is a skylark, as they seem to be quite common on the Wither Hills, although rather hard to photograph as they are quite flighty.
This has no sign of a crest, so I'd be very happy if someone can prove me wrong.

There are quite a number of these in the area, at the time photographed, covered in white berries.
There are also a number of matagouri plants nearby, but they're easily distinguished, as the matagouri doesn't have berries, but has thorns, whereas these have distinctive berries, and are divaricating rather than thorny.

I think it's Cortinarius genus, but several similar looking species.
Looks a lot like C. collybianus, but apparently this is associated with native beech forest, and no beech in the nearby vicinity. (Nearest would probably be 20km).

Description

This large moth was found inside, but I'm not sure if it's an endemic species? It has about a 90mm wingspan, and distinctive 'speech marks' on its wings.
Tentatively I'm wondering if it's Dasypodia selenophora, although most photos seem to show lighter examples than the one I captured.
