Description

Yellow fuzzy caterpillar found on common milkweed plant. About 3.5 cm in length, black body seen under yellow hairs. Yellow mouth, and spiky tufted tail.

Description

Small toad, seen in picture 1 on board found on a deck and in picture 2 in a hand. Toad is about 1.5 inch head to tail, brown with dark brown raised spots. Toes are long and finger-like.
Toads used to be prevalent in this area, but sadly have declined lately.

Description

Large brown caterpillar about 2 inches long with distinctive horn on one end. Darker brown on top with lighter tan below a light line. Found outside a large milkweed patch that was full of hummingbird moths all summer. Suspect it might be Hummingbird moth larvae ready to pupate.

Description

Monarch butterfly just after hatching. The larvae was brought into the house after hatching outdoors to watch the metamorphosis. Photo 2 shows butterfly just after it was released to the wild. Photo 3 shows the empty chrysalis.
I am not sure if this observation should be labelled captive?

Description

Large brownish bird with red spot on back of head. Underbelly is dark, bird flies with tail tight together. Larger than crows which band together to warn the bird off. Originally wondered if it was the osprey that is seen here regularly or the juvenile eagle. Area is a large lake, open areas and spruce trees. See also observation of August 15, 2019
Seems too large to be a flicker.

Description

Large hawk-like bird, seen soaring low over lake and spruce treed region. Larger than a crow, many of which group together and chase the bird away. Observation on August 17, 2019 seems like the same bird.

Short pink & white flowered plant found under the drip-edge of a spruce tree. Leaves as seen in View 3 are narrow. Leaf has three leaflets, with a band down the middle & hairy edges. Flowers are more elongated than round. Plant is approximately 12 cm in height and grows as a group rather than a single plant here & there. View 2 shows plant. View three shows bud and leaf. View 4 is the plant bunch.

Mushroom found under spruce trees. Specimen is 7cm in height with a tough exterior. Specimen has a light tan top and a white stem. View 2 shows the size and side view of the plant. View 3 shows the underside and gills and the root where it comes out of the ground. View 4 is an older specimen found nearby.

Description

Chrysalis of Monarch butterfly Day 1. Larvae of Monarch was brought into the house and put into a container with some milkweed leaves and a twig where it formed into a chrysalis. Another chrysalis was found on the next day outdoors. Both are being watched and studied.

Description

Suspect this might be Creeping Bellflower. Plant is 7cm tall with light purple bell-type flowers. Picture shows leaf, flowers, and flower bud. It is found at the corner of a chicken pen. Plant may be considered an invasive weed in Nova Scotia. Photos 2 & 3 are closer shots of the flower. Plant is contaminated with grass mulch from grass clearance.
