The day following hurricane Teddy, this butterfly was spotted in the garden. Is she a new one, or butterfly #5 which hatched two days ago?

This is chrysalis #5. She hatched the day before hurricane Teddy passed through the district. We hope that she had time to fly to safety before being buffeted by the winds.

Description

This is chrysalis #5. It was originally attached to a piece of wood, but the stick fell, and the chrysalis fell off. We brought it into the house and attached it to the light. We were watching it every day, and worried for its safety, but eventually it began to darken and we could see the wings. We were watching it and thinking we should set up time lapse photography, but were too slow and missed the emergence in the 16 minutes that it went from chrysalis to butterfly. She is a female.

On August 28, we discovered 7 monarch larva in the milkweed patch. We brought 4 larvae into the house to watch hatch, and then found another in the garden. The other two were never seen again. The chrysalis are numbered 2 through 5. The hatchings will be numbered in the same manner. This is butterfly #4.
In spite of watching carefully, we missed the hatching again. In the hour that it took to have breakfast, it went from a pupa to a fully hatched butterfly.

The 2nd day in succession where Monarchs are seen. Today there are two - a male and a female. The female looks to definitely be laying eggs on the underside of the milkweed. In personal behaviour, they are either copulating or fighting - both seem to be interacting with the other. Both look healthy.

Monarch Butterfly on milkweed. This is the 2nd sighting of the season – the first was on July 2. She, unfortunately did not lay any eggs. This butterfly appears to be a female, with her wings slightly damaged. Let’s hope she has the strength left to lay some eggs. The milk weed is currently in full blossom, so there is lots of food. In 2019, there were young larvae at this date.
