Hurray found the name of the tree

Melaleuca styphelioides, known as the prickly-leaved paperbark or prickly paperbark, is a plant native to eastern Australia. It is a tree with spongy bark, prickly leaves and spikes of creamy-white flowers.
Wikipedia

My sister would like the identity of this very interesting tree... The leafs were kind of spiky

One suggestion the suggestion app suggested was a beaver another was a broad leaf paper bark...it looks like it except this tree has wacky leaves

Found on H tree track whirinaki... In podocarpus native rain forest it was climbing up a tree ... it's leaves were very small and the plant was small and spindley, around 30 CM in lengthwill have to take a ruler next time... pretty cool close up pics

So the podocarpus rain forest is virgin rainforest... The plant in question was quite a way into the rainforrest The te uruwera and whirinaki Murupara area have naturally accusing mist all year round due to the very cool ground temperature... There are also naturally acuring springs in the area.... So it is possible that there is some microclimate thing going on.. Or prehaps taurepo was at one time more inland than we originally thought

Anyways I can always go back and get more photo's of the plant in question.... I should be able to find it again

Description

Which beard lichen is this?
I know it genus is usnea and it is a fruticose (means branchy lichen ) because my book said so ..

Murupara and surounding areas must be the lichen capital of new zealand...it grows every where....The Te Uruwera mountion range is one of the few areas that still has untouched bush and home to heaps of lichen. Lichen even grows on my tin roof

Also we have pine forests grown for beard lichen to grow on.

It was found growing on some electric fence wire string
...which is no longer used as electric fence...its super cool because it is growing happily on a man made material of nylon and wire

Sooooo which usnea is

I am going with usnea cornuta which is a type of beard lichen
But!!!! I could be wrong as beard lichens well all kind of looks like beards...

I would suggest reading for the Book
"which native tree " by Andrew Crow to find out heaps more cool stuff about the miro tree

This is a very cool tree from the podocarpaceae family it can be difficult to identify as it is very simalar to miro....so the picture shows one aspect you can use to identify it and that is the red stuff on the trunk which becomes much more vivid when its wet...i call it the blood tree and it helps remind me its a matai

This location is one of the best places in new zealand to see podocarp low land trees in original condition

Sadly I then found out they are a pest that came.to new zealand in 2016 and have spread very quickly...well i can confirm they are invading Murupara . I have spoted about 12 of them..i have killed them and now will go collect there bodies...photos are of there remains
