What

Red-flowering Gum (Corymbia ficifolia)

Observer

zoovet

Date

September 18, 2015

Description

Approx 6m tall tree adjacent to driveway. Dark brown, thick bark with a rough surface, splitting and peeling in patches along the length of the curving 30cm wide trunk. Dark red-brown sap seeps from between the cracks in the bark and has stained the trunk and top of the letterbox below it. Small patches of blue-grey lichen are attached to the bark on the mid to lower trunk on the West facing side A few scattered red flowers remain in the canopy but most have dropped their anthers exposing the small woody cup that supported them. Clusters of leaf buds and small leaves are emerging at the end of many twiggy branches. The more mature leaves are dark green with smooth sides and pointed tips and many are damaged with dark brown or pale blotches or irregular shaped pieces missing. The gum nuts are large, woody and hang as singles from pendulous short stems.
