Details for the 2015 NatureWatch NZ Auckland workshop

Here is our schedule for our Auckland workshop on 27–28 June.

The venue is the Landcare Research building on 231 Morrin Road, Tamaki. Click here to see a map.

There is off-street parking in the triangular car park behind the Landcare Research building, provided the gate at the entrance off Morrin Road is open (it's University controlled); if not open on Sunday, there will be plenty of parking available on Morrin Road. There are doors from each side of building, but these will only be open with attendants between 09:30–10:00 or by texting Colin Meurk or Jon Sullivan (everyone registered will be emailed Colin and Jon's numbers).

Saturday:

  • 9:30-10:00 cuppa, muffins, informal introductions
  • 10-10:30 Colin Meurk chair of NZBRN: introduction to restoration in NZ and its monitoring, where NatureWatch NZ fits in
  • 10:30-11:30 Jon Sullivan: Introduction to NatureWatch NZ, what's it for, how you use it (includes making the Tamaki place, and phone app)
  • 11:30-12:00 Steve Pawson: Projects on NatureWatch NZ (set up a project for use in the afternoon)
  • Reminder: install iNaturalist mobile app if you have a smart phone or tablet (help available over lunch if needed)
    If using own camera, please check that the date and time are correct.
  • 12:00-13:00 lunch, sponsored by Auckland Council
  • 13:00-13:30 Jon Sullivan: Essentials of monitoring
  • 13:30-15:00 everyone outside doing ecoblitz style documentation of 10 m X 10 m plots and garden bird survey and other methods
  • 15:00-15:30 afternoon tea
  • 15:30-16:20 upload all observations to project (those that weren't uploaded in the field via the mobile app), identifications and curation of each others' observations
  • 16:20-16:30 Anmar Abdul-Rahman and Jon Sullivan: Adding video and sound to NatureWatch NZ
  • 16:30-17:00 Bryce McQuillan and Angela Simpson: Tips on how to take good photos for nature watching.

  • 10:00-10:30 More tips on using custom fields with projects and other clever tricks to get the most out of projects
