Yes - 3rd time lucky! This is the rare Rata Moehau, one of only about 14 known trees growing and on the verge of extinction. One of the distinguishing features are the pointed tips on the leaves while the northern rata leaves are broader and have a more rounded tip with a notch in them.

After 2 hikes going down into steep gullies after this rare tree, @pjd1 finally took pity on me and let me tag along with him and @jeremy_rolfe when they went to visit. Such an honour - kia ora you 2 :D
