Just 2 days to go...

Just over two days to go and the forecast is for a beautiful weekend! We've seen Swallows and House Martins arriving over the past week, Orange-tips and other butterflies are out in force while our spring flowers are putting on an incredible display!

The weather for this weekend is looking good, certainly a lot better than the storms we got last year! So we can expect an brilliant natural spring festival.

Obviously, we can't put anything out these days without acknowledging COVID. However, engaging with nature either from home our during your daily exercise allowance is a great way to stimulate the mind and open your eyes to what's around you.

The challenge is also a great way to explore those places you can't get to at the moment. See what others are seeing and perhaps help them learn by sharing some of your own knowledge.

Have fun, stay safe!

Hi. Just signed up having been suggested by a friend I should do so. Can anyone explain what happens with any images I may upload? I unticked the 'yes, create license for images, sounds and observations' when I signed up. This was to protect my images and any copyright. It was unfortunate there was a single tick box covering three completely seperate things.

If I upload an image will it be used commercially in any way without first seeking my permission to use it? T.i.a

Hi @wiley198 thanks for joining in!

I am not an iNaturalist 'official' you'd need to use the forums for that but on licencing you can change your setting any time you like. If you go to your profile then click on "Edit account settings and profile" then scroll down you should see 3 licence settings;
1 - the general observation data, 2 - images, 3 - sound files

You can also check a box that will apply the licence to observations you have already added.

iNaturalist uses Creative Commons licences which you're probably aware are one of the more universally recognised. There are descriptions elsewhere on the internet which include more in-depth descriptions (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/). If you want to avoid commercial use then you need to select those with an "NC" component. "No licence" still permits iNaturalist to use your information as per their terms and conditions.

By applying a 'NC' licence commercial users would need to contact you if they wanted to use your data/images.

It is worth noting that as per any internet site (facebook, instagram, flickr, pinterest) you are still reliant on people and organisations abiding by the licence as your images would in effect be 'out there'.
