CoastBlitz Patea has begun!
Led by the South Taranaki Underwater Club, this project aims to understand how the subtidal reefs of South Taranaki are unique.
The CoastBlitz Patea Hook and Line Survey has been designed to monitor the predatory reef fish species which occur at the project reef. This is one of three scientific survey components within CoastBlitz Patea. The remaining two are the Benthic Survey and the Underwater Camera Survey. Another component, simply named CoastBlitz Patea, will be used to document all general observations made during the reef dives, as well as incorporate information from the three scientific survey components.
Tools in NatureWatch NZ help keep track of the information. It is hoped that through CoastBlitz Patea, a general ReefBlitz survey model can be used to monitor local reefs along the coastline.
This project is a collaborative effort between South Taranaki Underwater Club, Taranaki Regional Council, Hawera High School, NatureWatch NZ, MBIE Curious Minds and other members of the community.
