Join Sonoma County Parks and the California Academy of Sciences in one of a series of Sonoma County grassroots bioblitzes! Located in Bodega Bay, Doran Park has a 2-mile stretch of sandy beach and a rock jetty at the harbor mouth provides access for exploring sea life. The main trail in Doran meanders through the dunes on the ocean side of the park, and connects to a boardwalk with benches and wildlife viewing areas. Enjoy the stunning scenery and help Sonoma County inventory the species in this unique park.
A bioblitz is an intensive one-day study of biodiversity in a specific location. We’ll look for birds, mammals, fish, reptiles, butterflies, insects, spiders, trees, flowers, mushrooms, anything! There's even a good low tide during our bioblitz so we'll look for intertidal creatures as well.
People of all ages and skill levels are welcome! You bring your curiosity, a smart phone with the iNaturalist app downloaded (or digital camera), and tons of enthusiasm. We’ll rally some experts and folks who know the area. Together we’ll make some science!
The fun starts at 7 am on Thursday, July 7. Why so early? There's a good low tide that morning! We'll explore the park and document everything we can find for a few hours, then we'll upload our observations, see what everyone else found, and get help with IDs.
