Citizen Science project to map and monitor rocky shores' bioindicator species along the coast of Portugal.
In a climate change scenario, it is important to aware society for the need to protect marine species biodiversity and to ensure its sustainability. Therefore, the project EduMar|EduSea (Educate for the Sea) is being developed in Portugal aiming to educate students (elementary and middle school) for the preservation of the sea and its resources through citizen science. Students from the 4th and 5th grade are participating in a set of interdisciplinary science activities focusing on learning the causes and consequences of climate change in ecosystems of the intertidal rocky shores and acquiring skills to identify and report on site a set of bioindicator and common rocky shores species.
Developed by Escola Superior de Educação João de Deus/Associação de Jardins-Escolas João de Deus (ESEJD-AJEJD) in partnership with the School of Tourism and Maritime Technology/Polytechnic Institute of Leiria (ESTM-IPL) and the National Museum of Natural History and Science/University of Lisbon (MUHNAC-ULisboa) and public and private elementary schools from the 1st and 2nd cycles.
"EDUCar para o MAR - EDUMAR" Project, SAICT-POL/23480/2016, co-funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology I.P. (PIDDAC) and the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER), through the Regional Operational Program of the Center and the Regional Operational Program of Lisbon (LISBOA-01-0145-FEDER-023480/CENTRO-01-0145-FEDER-023480).
