Fiordland is a remote area in which many marine mammal species occur, including bottlenose, dusky and common dolphins, orca, and southern right, humpback, sperm, beaked and pilot whales. Due to the remoteness of the area and the relative lack of 'effort' (i.e. trips) along the coastline, little is known about the distribution and abundance of many of these, and in some cases even the species are unknown. Obtaining sightings data helps to build an overall picture of seasonal distribution and abundances, which can be used to inform science and management decisions.
