Let's Get Counting!

It's all go! We hope you can help us make this the biggest year yet. The best types of observations are those that are timed - ideally around 30min, but of course if you just happen to notice a Kereru and don't have 30min it's still valuable data.
The forecast is a bit mixed this year so it may be a challenge to spot birds but remember the best times to spot Kereru are in the mornings as well as the later in the afternoon.
Happy counting! Tim

I'm excited! This is going to be fun.

Not that I've seen a kererū yet. I'm at Lincoln, part of the Canterbury Plains kererū desert. There is a bellbird singing across campus at the moment though, which itself is a rare thing in Lincoln at this time of year. I'll see if I can get outside today and at least load up some zero kererū counts.

We'll have a better chance of finding kererū up in the Christchurch Port Hills on the weekend.

Why isn't Invercargill recognised as part of New Zealand?
I tried posting sightings but get told they don't count because they must be observed in New Zealand.

Hi Norma,

Invercargill is definitely in New Zealand! :-)

What's happening is that you've typed in your place name but not added it to the map. See the screenshots on our Help pages for tips: https://inaturalist.nz/pages/add-an-observation-nz

The trick is that you type in a location name to search, and then you've got to press your enter key to make the search happen. That calls on Google Maps to do its best to put a pin on the map, which you can then correct if necessary before submitting.

Since you've got a street address entered, Google's location should be plenty accurate so I can go ahead and do this for you if you like.

Then the kereru count project will think your observations are in NZ.

Cheers,

Jon
