Monte Cecilia Park is an urban parkland in the Auckland suburb of Hillsborough and home to Pah Homestead, an Italianate villa housing the James Wallace Art Trust's collection of New Zealand art.
The extensive grounds feature one of the finest collections of mature and rare exotic trees in Auckland, although some, (including a Chilean wine palm -Jubaea chilensis), have fallen due to recent storm events.
An interesting variety of native species have been planted in the park which provide food and shelter for a large population of birds and invertebrates. Seasonal visitors include kaka and shining cuckoo, and resident birds like kereru, piwakawaka, tui, riroriro/grey warbler, tauhou/silvereyes and blackbirds are plentiful all year round.
The purpose of this project is to record the fascinating diversity of flora and fauna in an urban park to highlight the importance of protecting and creating more green spaces like this refuge for the natural world in a fast-growing city like Auckland.
