This project is set-up for QUT's BVB225 Ecosystems and Biodiversity Assessment – Herbarium Assessment: Weighting is 25% of final grade.
Overall, this project will help you to become more aware of the diversity of native plant species in your local environment.
It will teach you the useful skills of preserving and mounting a plant specimen and familiarise yourself with one of the leading nature apps in the world that connects over a million scientists worldwide, iNaturalist AU. It will also give you an introduction to plant taxonomy, and the type of plant features taxonomist use to distinguish plant families and species.
You will be provided with 10 herbarium sheets and a plant press. You will have access to plant identification guides and microscopes during the laboratory practicals.
We know that students like many people in the community are using apps like iNaturalist to identify species so we have now incorporated this as part of your assessment. If using this app to identify your samples you must first provide an identification yourself when you upload your photos, fill out the required information and collect samples to dry and label for your collection.
Happy plant sampling!
