This project is managed by Office of Kentucky Nature Preserves natural heritage botanists, and is intended for use by conservation professionals, community scientists, and trained volunteers. At this time, participation in the project is by invitation only.
The Office of Kentucky Nature Preserves (OKNP) serves as the natural heritage program for Kentucky, and manages information for all of Kentucky's rare plants, animals, and fungi. In this role, one of our key tasks is collecting and maintaining data on rare species locations. We use this data to assess species' statuses, create distribution maps and models, and to assist agencies, researchers, and private organizations in their planning, prioritization, and land management.
The Rare Plants of Kentucky iNat project focuses on plant species of Kentucky that are state listed Endangered, Threatened or Special Concern, and is designed to facilitate the sharing of rare plant observations with OKNP staff. Observations from the iNat community can help us fill in knowledge gaps of species distributions, as well as update us on the current status of known populations.
To learn more about the status of any of the species in this project, see our rare species publication at https://eec.ky.gov/Nature-Preserves/biodiversity/Pages/default.aspx, or visit our environmental review tool at https://kynaturepreserves.org/
