The central location for the Texas Mid-Coast Bioblitz will be held at the Hudson Woods Unit of San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge. The address can be found at the bottom of this page. There you will meet the American Conservation Experience (ACE) crew members who are hosting the bioblitz. We will be providing water, snacks, and other helpful information such as directions to different cool locations around the refuge. We would love to meet you all but it is not necessary to come to Hudson woods to participate in the bioblitz. If you post an observation within the San Bernard or Brazoria NWR boundaries, your observation will automatically be posted to the project as long as it is added to iNaturalist between August 7th-9th. ACE crew members will be present at Hudson woods between 7 am-12 pm on Friday (Aug. 7th) and Saturday (Aug. 8th). The project will continue on August 9th, but we will not be present at Hudson woods. Please join the project so that we can keep track of who is participating. Thanks!

I'm sure looking forward to this! I'll be at Hudson Woods on Saturday afternoon, and hopefully we'll do some black-lighting/mothing there too in the evening/night. :) Of course, I'll be wearing the mask at all times when around others, and I'll be doing some social distancing, as Keith suggests. So, no hugs/handshakes, but I'd still love to see some folks attend! :)
Tagging a few of the big observers in the vicinity! Tag others that might be interested too!

Thanks for tagging me, Monica. I am busy Saturday night so unfortunately will miss the blacklighting, but will come out some other time during the weekend if I can, probably Friday or Saturday. I'll be focusing on leafhoppers (Cicadellidae).
@sambiology thanks for tagging me, I think I will be able to participate.
@mcm @ckneuppe Do you guys already know about this? Do other Brazoria Master Naturalists? How about Friends of the Refuge?
@sambiology @katittle Sam, where are you thinking of possible night lighting? Had been wanting to set up something at Brazoria NWR Education Center (nice lighted concrete buildings...). Was setting it up with Jennifer until Harvey...so much for that year. BTW, this is about the worst time for moth-ing in this area of TX. Been getting 7-8 a night in Lake Jackson-just pitiful.
So, I was thinking about doing black-lighting at the Hudson Woods unit (I've got blacklights with portable batteries), but it may be really interesting to have some set ups at the education center too -- I suppose there we'd have electricity, and I could toss on a mercury vapor there! The more, the merrier!
Bummer that it's not a great moth-ing time, but hopefully a couple will still show up! And hey, maybe some beetles or leafhoppers will surprise us at the sheets. :)
This looks very interesting, would love to get out there Saturday or Sunday. I have no problem going Sunday if social distancing will be a problem on Saturday. That said, it would be nice to meet some of you on Saturday that have been so great in helping my wife (@plsommer ) and I learn so much about IDing everything, plus moth nights are always fun!
Since we have never been there before, a few questions. Though I believe I have been cycling near there. Anyway, where to park? Are there trail maps anywhere? Most importantly, are there any restroom facilities?
Thanks for the invite. I plan to attend.
@krancmm Yes, I believe notice has been circulated to Brazoria county Master Naturalists.
Thanks for tagging me. I won't be able to make it but hopefully can ID some if needed when posted.
Count me in!

@krancmm @sambiology I got approval to set up mothing at Hudson Woods on Saturday night. Other locations that may be viable would be Texas Mid-Coast complex headquarters or San Bernard Complex. Let me know if there are any other locations y'all might want to check out because I need to get approval before we go there. Technically, the refuge is closed after sundown so we must notify refuge officers of our plans in advance. Also, we can't moth at the Discovery Center in Brazoria because it has an electric gate and I do not have a key to get in after sundown.
@rich451 Saturday is going to be the main day for the bioblitz. You can still come to Hudson Woods on Sunday, but ACE Crew members will not be there to greet you. There is parking at the front gate and also across from the Cabin. You can find the cabin down the road, where there is also a separate building with restrooms. There are plenty of trails at Hudson woods, so I will work with Fish and Wildlife to get that information. Hopefully, I can upload it on iNaturalist. If not, we will be providing handouts on Friday and Saturday.
@katittle Great, thanks for all the info! Checking the calendar closer I see I am already committed for Saturday evening, but we will try to come out one of the days. Thanks
This is incredibly tempting. You may see me there =]
I plan to be there early in the morning to locate and identify spiders! Will be fun!
I will be there Friday morning and will come out Saturday night for the mothing.
@katittle Do we have a time for the mothing Saturday night? And will it be in the same location (Hudson Woods- Scoby Lake Rd, Angleton, TX 77515) because I have never been to Hudson Woods so that is what I am plugging into my GPS. Thanks! Am looking forward to it.
I plan on getting to Hudson Woods on Saturday at around 1 PM or so for a while, and then I'll jump over to another spot (not yet sure where!), but I'll return to Hudson Woods at like 7 PM and will stay put there allllll night. :) That's where I'm planning on black-lighting. I've got 6 blacklight stations that I'll use, so hopefully we can stay socially distant while looking at bugs.
On Sunday, I'm not sure where all I'll explore. Maybe a bit closer to the coast. :) The nice thing about this bioblitz is the size -- lots of potential spots to explore. :)
Just in case, here is my # -- feel free to text me! 214 215 5605
Looking forward to this!
I plan on attending, but not sure when I will arrive. Looking forward to seeing this unit, as I have never seen it before.
Is there already a 'place' on iNaturalist for the area we will be blitzing? I would like to check out what's already been spotted there.
Ah-ha! Found it on my own. Hope I'll see yall there.

I think a "thank you!" is in order for the folks who organized this bioblitz. We enjoyed our first-time visit to the Hudson Woods Unit and look forward to exploring some of the other units. And of course, we appreciated the trail maps and snacks! Prior to Friday, there were 2581 observations made of 697 species by 149 users. As of my typing this, that count jumped to 3736 observations made of 921 species by 165 users. What a great collection of new data! It has given me some thoughts on how to organize a similar bioblitz for our local Exploration Green Conservancy in Houston.
Thanks y'all!
We were unable to make it, sure looks like it a was good time. So far : 1155 observations, 408 species and 23 observers. Well done!
