Over the next two years, I am leading a project to convert approximately 3 acres of Bermuda grass lawn back into a native Blackland Prairie on my school's campus. This year we are starting with a very small 1/3 acre area, and depending on how it goes, we will expand to two additional fields to reach 3 acres next year. I'm looking for any expert advice on how to best ensure the success of this project. Once the areas are established, we plan to do a yearly rotational burn to teach students about ecological succession and how wildfires are beneficial in our ecoregion.
Progress so far:
10/5 was awarded grant from ladybird johnson wildflower center.
10/22 seed from Native American Seed co was delivered. (2lbs Blackland Prairie mix, 1lb plains coreopsis, small amounts of lemon mint and Mexican hat)
10/25 herbicide was applied to field to kill Bermuda grass and weeds. Plans to burn the field after 7-10 days.
