These Scarlet-bodied Wasp Moths appear to be gathering toxic compounds which are used during mating. The male moths pass on the toxic compounds to the female and her eggs; this is the only insect known to pass on a chemical defense in this way.

They are usually known for doing this behavior with Dogfennel (Eupatorium capillofolium) but it appears they are able to extract the compounds from this dead/dying Boneset, also a species of Eupatorium.

There were at least 16 and at times probably 20 moths on this plant. Well over 20 total in the surrounded patch of vegetation.
