I heard the woodpecker, so I looked into my binoculars and couldn't believe my eyes! I immediately tried to snap a good shot, but the two above are the best I could get. I followed it around for 10 minutes trying to get a shot, but it was challenging with it's camouflage and constant movement. I was stoked to see this! It was pecking and flying around! Rare sighting for my area!

I've always been a bit unsettled with birds like this... Could Iceland x Herring Gulls occur rarely & look like this??? Structurally different than other HERG --- but the long thin bill look seems to be matched by many Vega

High overcast + blacklit makes the photos look a bit contasty --- but well studied in scope (and over multiple days) --- full breeding garb in early Oct suits vega molt scehdule --- deep pink legs, dark eye, long slender bill all suit vega over other hybrids / asian considerations

An Island first! I have been expecting my first Bluethroat at this exact spot on Qikiqtaruk for many years - and today it finally happened with this displaying male. My observations over the coming days would continue to see this male displaying here, as well as a few others, and ultimately lead to a female and the second-ever Bluethroat nest for Canada.

With HERG flock hanging out around the jetty immediately south of the parking lot. HERG-size near-adult gull with notably darker mantle, but not nearly dark enough for pure LBBG with significant contrast between mantle and primaries. Dullish yellow legs. Structure was very similar to HERG, not noticeably more slender or long-winged than surrounding gulls. Same bird: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/199928121
