South African mantis egg sack without the white foam?
I assume this is the South African mantis but have never seen one that looks like this.
On wall beside footpath.
Female in process of laying eggs - the first time I have observed this process.
The protective egg casing still appears soft and 'foamy'.
Not sure what the various parts in play/sight are. I'm guessing the two small, shiny, green things at the very rear of the abdomen, adjacent to the egg casing, might be eggs which are inserted into each segment of the casing as it is formed.
There is a small, thin, 'feeler' like appendage which appeared to be waving around and which might have been somehow helping with the process.
Then again......
Pair mating on a kawakawa plant
Found on my catnip plant in my New Lynn garden.
First yellow one I have seen
Noticed a NZ female praying mantis mating with three males. Walked past 10 mins later and she'd caught a butterfly and was eating it. Nice multitasking!!
One of two seen that day, in coastal dunes. No more seen in Whanganui region since then
Observation for the left side egg mass.
Obs for the right side ootheca, New Zealand Mantis (Orthodera novaezealandiae)

Obs for the right ootheca (egg mass). The left one looks like a South African ootheca (Miomantis caffra)? Both on the underside of a magnolia leaf.

There are lots of gum emperor moth pupae, and old pupal cases, in this lone eucalyptus tree and the adjacent willow and silver birch trees.
