For my first-ever sighting of a Prothonotary Warbler, (not so common around here), I'd have preferred a more-natural setting than him perched on the windshield of my truck, apparently attracted to Vermont's yellow inspection sticker, but sometimes one doesn't get a choice.

Red-shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus)Observer

I initially thought it was Cooper's but it's almost the size of a Crow. A Blue Jay wasn't afraid to swoop in and try to drive it away. Another Red-shouldered was squawking, nearby. I believe this bird to be a juvenile and sibling in a local pair. Two days of rain and fog and limited hunting opportunities for predators, this hawk was just trying to dry out as the temperature rose before his day began.

When I put feed out, maybe seven dozen birds come right in. None came this morning - just a lone Dove sitting in the tree. It took me almost 10 minutes to realize it wasn't a Dove.

This Sharp-shinned Hawk swooped in and grabbed a Blue Jay, but couldn't keep it. It then flew to a branch and tucked its right leg into its breast feathers. I thought it may have injured the leg, or a talon, but after a few moments of spreading its tail and wings and aligning its feathers, it seemed recovered and flew away.

It doesn't appear that it's some kind of injury damage as much as a deformity and, I understand, from A.K.D., (Avian Keratin Disorder). It's hard to believe she, a woodpecker, has survived to adulthood with this bill.
