Description

Guaru| killifish Melanorivulus rossoi (Costa, 2005)

……………………..

Records of a couple of the killifish Melanorivulus rossoi (Costa, 2005). This species is characterized by the gray greenish body, in contrast with numerous circular and red blotches, mainly distributed on the dorsal portion and unpaired fins. In the males, it’s visible a black strip that begins in the mouth region, extends through the orbit and follows to the caudal peduncle. Numerous circular black blotches similar to the red blotches, which can be visible in the ventral region. In females the black strip is inconspicuous and generally visible only on the head and the most anterior region of the flank and the circular black blotches are absent.
Although belonging to the annual killifish family (Rivulidae), this type of life strategy is not known to no one Melanorivulus species. However, species from this genus commonly presents high degree of endemism, which is observed to M. rossoi, that occurs only in a few plated and flooded areas on the headwaters of rio Anhanduí, between Campo Grande and Sidrolândia municipalities, in MS state. Due to its endemism pattern, it is possible M. rossoi is a species under some degree of threat of extinction, although it was classified as “data insufficient” in the last assessment of threatened species in Brazil.

Maximum size recorded in the scientific literature (standard length): 35.8 mm.
