Description

Collected by Chris Curry and all field photos by Chris Curry. Found on a hardwood log. Bruised blue. Had a strong odor described as being like that of Pluteus americanus. Pleurocystidia are metuloids with walls under 2 μm thick (0.7 μm and 1.0 μm for the 2 measured) and either lack horns or have short, rounded horns. All microscopic photos were from a roman aqueduct section mounted in phloxine (1 drop), congo red (1 drop) and NH4OH (2 drops).

Description

Evan Adkins collection, see https://www.facebook.com/... and https://www.facebook.com/....

“Southern Ohio. The base was was under leaves and I’m fairly certain it was on a piece of wood, although there’s a chance it wasn’t. The top was a little viscid. The outer margin was already bruising and the stipe turned blue 15 minutes after handling. Mixed woods with lots of beech, oak and walnut. Odor strong and like Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata”.

Pleurocystidia measure (36.3) 41.9 – 52.3 (52.8) × (14.4) 14.7 – 17.7 (18.1) µm

Q = (2.4) 2.5 – 3 (3.5) ; N = 10

Me = 48.4 × 16.7 µm ; Qe = 2.9

Cheilocystidia similar to pleurocystidia but sometimes narrower.

Spores, including nodules measure (6.7) 7.3 – 9.4 (9.6) × (4.5) 5.1 – 7.7 (8.2) µm

Q = (1) 1.1 – 1.6 (1.8) ; N = 30

Me = 8.5 × 6.5 µm ; Qe = 1.3

Growing on a hardwood log. Likely maple. Thin annulus on stem. Spore deposit seems to be orange but I am attempting to print these as well. Specimens had probably been rotting for a few days before collection.
