Brewster’s warbler, Bluewing x Goldenwind
Self-fertilizing, hermaphroditic rhabditid isolated from a gull feather on the ground at the MBL campus, Woods Hole MA on 10 July 2019.
Identified as Oscheius sp. based on morphology: extended rectal canal and pharynx without a notable middle pharyngeal bulb.
Confirmed as a rhabditid by 18S rDNA sequence amplification from published PCR primers (gel image, N2 = C. elegans (Bristol), F5 = sample worm), but outside Caenorhabditis by failure to amplify ITS2 sequence (as described in Barrière & Félix 2014 in Wormbook: Isolation of C. elegans and related nematodes).
18S sequencing confirmed ID as O. tipulae, as the sample showed 99% identity to O. tipulae reference genome (screenshot), and did not align with any other reference Oscheius or rhabditid species.
