Description

Chollas are an open branching woody cactus. It has grey green stems also called joints with nodules. Each nodule has a cluster of stiff spines. The cactus flowers between April and May and has flowers that range between yellow and red and many shades in between. The fruits are oval and dry and covered in spines.

The cholla prefers well drained sandy desert soil and gravel slopes. They can live up to 30 years old and typically grow between 3 and 7 feet tall but can grow up to 13 feet tall.

Birds love nesting in chollas and the spikes aren’t so sharp that it harms the birds.

A common nickname for chollas is the jumping cactus because they are known to latch on to clothing and their arms detach.
