Recorded at 807 N 6, Alpine, TX (30.363737°, -103.665596°) using an iPhone 13 Pro and Twisted Wave app. Edited with Audacity 3.3.3 for noise reduction and amplification.
Tricky ID because of poor looks, female SUTA was considered but OROR was agreed on by group because of wing bars (not visible in photo but seen), black wing feathers with outlines, more conical beak, and eye stripe in front of eye rather than skin.
Heard out in the woods from somewhere on the ground--thought it was a quail, but definitely not. Heard just before nightfall. Merlin IDs as a Common Pauraque, but it seems far out of range? (Though admittedly extremely close, if not an exact match.)
