Nido de abeja Halictidae (quizás Caenohalictus o alguna otra con brillos verde esmeralda), con su propietaria en el interior. En la zona hay varias decenas de otros agujeros como este, en un área de suelo compactado y despejado de vegetación. En la última foto se ve una abeja Sphaecodes pasando al lado del nido; estas abejas cleptoparásitas también parecen estar anidando en el lugar.
Strangely, in this area I have seen a tremendous migration toward the sea of Painted Ladies (especially in March). Though some of these still linger in our area, I have not seen one Monarch, except this one that looked like either fungus had killed it or a bird had attacked and ripped its upper wing apart. It was on the ground near bushes. No others around. Is there something that loves to eat these butterflies?
