I did not get a photo of mother, but she was definitely not far away.
We had another pheasant nest in the deep grass of the dunes of the Dune Garden of the Manawatu Estuary Ramsar site, about 3 years ago, but it was eventually ravaged by a mustelid. Didn't see enough evidence to know if it was a stoat or something larger.
