Visiting Fort Ord National Monument, I am always impressed with the dense coating of diverse lichens on the dead twigs and branches of Chamise (Adenostoma fasciculatum) and manzanita (Arctostaphylos sp.).

In order to study the diversity of lichens in such a diminutive space, I collected this twig and over the next month I will try to identify and post as many of the lichen species on it as I can. The twig (with lichens) weighed 16.1 grams and had a tip to tip length of 327 mm.

This Lace lichen growing from the very tip was one of two individuals found on it.
