Observer

Date

Description

Pictured here is an American Lovebug, or as it is scientifically named, Plecia americana. This love bug constitutes part of the protostome family. It is an insect that attaches itself to another individual when mating, hence the association with the word "love" in its name. These lovebugs are black in color, with a bright red humpback on its thorax and a pair of wings, as stated by the Insect Identification Government Organization. These lovebugs are native to Florida and other states in Central America. They usually come around during their mating seasons in the spring and fall (at about May and September). They are most active in weather over 84 degrees Fahrenheit. This observation was made in Wesley Chapel, Florida on 09/20/2020 at 5:43pm.
