What

Dyer's Polypore (Phaeolus schweinitzii)

Observer

Date

Place

Oregon, US (Google, OSM)

Description

So when we first saw a couple of these in the yard I wasn't really sure what we were looking at; if this might be a weird species or not. So took photos on phone and right now my theory is that they are mushrooms that got knocked/kicked over awhile ago and started trying to grow back into the ground upside down while decaying on the surface. It has what appears to be a black, velvety texture (which I presume is the decay), and I turned one over with my foot just to be sure it wasn't a weird patch of moss and it was flat like the top of some mushroom caps (the photo that isn't so black). My knowledge of fungus isn't very extensive though so just my personal guess. In any case I'm posting this as an observation, might add to it in the future as I pay more attention to our local fungus (as in if I find one that looks like this but not so decayed, would update).
