2 chicks, about a week old. Low quality pics as it was getting dark. Built a rudimentary shelter for the chicks with a few logs, hope they make it. Parents around chasing BBGs.
The Auckland Four-Wheel Drive Club had visited the beach the day before. On the whole they had stayed below the high tide mark, but had ventured into the nesting area at the southern-most stream mouth. No sign of any dotterel chicks. There were either three or four dotterel pairs, all behaving territorial.
Second attempt, hopefully goes better than the first one! Area has been roped off. Nest in an usual good location; top of a vegetated dune, mostly spinifex and pingao. As it is not exposed, I don't think we will install a protective cover.
We're on
CLH looking good.

CLH born in Piha late 2017, banded in Piha January 2018.
Things might happen soon.
Looking good there

Keep your friend close but your enemies closer.
I think it's safe to say it: mission accomplished. 3 chicks fledged from the only breeding pair in Piha, nesting right in the middle of dogs off-leash area.
Karekare new recruitments, should fledge in the next days.
Two of the chicks chilling together and the third one under the nest cover. Adults around and looking tired, it's hot.
All three chicks safe and sound after a busy week. The three of them are able to do short flights.
Made it through the weekend. Waitangi day coming...
Our three chicks doing great, supervised by one of their parents. Three weeks old now.
The three chicks are doing great. Hanging around and within the nesting area with both parents keeping an eye on them.
The 3 chicks doing well and supervised by a parent. The other parent foraging near the water.
The whole family (2 adults + 3 chicks) outside the fenced area, heading to north Piha.
One in the nest, the other two around/under the log inside the roped off area. One adult in the nest and the other one in the log.
Two chicks, just hatched last night or early morning. Apparently still incubating one egg. VOC and spur-winged plovers nearby, one had a go at the chicks but dotties fought back.
Three chicks. Photo by Sean Mackenzie.
Moved everything from Union Bay to the new nesting site. Not the best location but here's hope. 1 egg laid so far. Bird incubating while partner foraging near the stream.
After abandoning the nest in Union Bay they're having another go in the middle of the beach.
The nest was abandoned, the birds probably felt the eggs were no good after the storm surge from a couple of weeks back. I found this one buried in the sand. The birds have moved further south and are having a second attempt. See https://inaturalist.nz/observations/18548623
All good, cover still there despite the strong westerlies.
Cover made it through the gales of the last few days.
